The name is just as it sounds, A ridge or “backbone “ on the trail to Mt. Baldy that can be treacherous to cross because of a crosswind that is known to be pretty strong!

The trail resembles a spine, on the north side you see the desert area and to the south you see the coastal cities of Los Angeles. And on a clear day the coast of Southern California is visible in the distance.
